Need help finding good employees?

(Published in the May 2023 issue of the Millwater Magazine and the Orewa Magazine)

Tick 2 boxes at once with this idea. Have you considered running an employment advert for your ideal employee that talks about how good your brand and purpose is, how you employ the best people and how much you value them?

Here’s an example for how to make driving for a scrap metal yard sound like a great job: “Are you a great HT Class 2 driver and want to work locally and be rewarded well for the job you do, saving metal is important and so are our staff to us” …

I don’t need to point out how this will build your brand while standing out to some of the best likely candidates. That’s ticking 2 boxes at once.

Consider local radio for this. You’ll be surprized how affordable this can be. And if you alternated between 15 and 30 second spots you could also add an offer to half your adverts for even greater success. Something like, “We’ll give you cash for your written off flood damaged fridge”, for example.

You could also run this in a local magazine or paper with the headline: ‘Saving Heavy Metal’, for a bit of fun. It’s going to make people look.

Hopefully this gives you a change in perspective. When business gets tight it is time to look at the way you are spending. Cutting back on your advertising will only leave you sitting on your hands for when people are ready to spend. (I talk about how you could even increase your market share in a market downturn in last Month’s April issue.) Running dual purpose adverts is not only a creative way to promote your business, but it means you’ll still have exposure and likely be in the right place at the right time when someone is looking for you.
